Just Like to Play

It was only raining on a few blocks in West Hollywood today- really strange. Wanted to watch Alice and Wonderland, but didn't have the patience to wait in line... I'll just wait a few weeks.

Found this Norma Kamali trench coat the other day! It's actually a size bigger, but I kind of like it that way.
I wore it out to breakfast- with a orange silk scarf, American Apparel nylon leggings, and a pair of Lamb strappy sandals.

Also wore my new favorite earrings (that I accidentally broke later on while attempting to adjust the clip-on clasp)...
A few people have written to me recommending that I stick with neutral colors or that I should really consider dressing like those models off-duty. You know what I have to say to that crap? Screw it. Fashion should be fun. There should never be any rules about what you should and shouldn't wear. Matter of fact, I hate those magazine articles that talk about dressing to suit your figure... maybe some people don't want to accentuate their small waistline... maybe some people like showing off their wide hips... maybe some don't want to wear all black just to look thinner... do you get my point?

hi!

just wanna say that you have a fan in me (from Singapore). so thank you for dressing up and having fun! it gives me so much more courage to be wild with my own fashion!

i have a tiny request though - could you possibly do a post on your everyday makeup? i love that it's nude and natural but with that touch of smoky look on your eyes.

keep on blogging and posting photos!

I appreciated what you said; I agree. The idea that whoever said those things to you is telling you to look like "everyone" else seems pretty closed-minded. Why do you have to look like "everyone else"? Having fun, and being creative with fashion is kind of what makes it so amazing.

When it comes to fashion I want to see something different, unforgettable, and something inspiring. Not something that I see every day. And some women appreciate their curves... Why would they have to hide them, if they like them? Sorry, I'm ranting. But I can't help but feel passionate about this subject.

Anyways I like the trench and the photograph with the rain+umbrella!

Karla, I'm sure you're going to get massive comments of encouragement. And that is great! Because often it's good to know the people we're touching... the lives we're affecting for the good. But, I had to leave mine, anyway! =^)

I've loved your blog. And one of the things that is so wonderful about it (and you) is that you're encouraging other women to step out of the box. Try something new. Be different. Wear what you love because you love it.

We walk around in this culture that tells us to dress this way, buy that, act like this, show off these things, hide that... and I see women on a daily basis scared to try something new, petrified to be adventurous. I'm PASSIONATE about helping women break OUT of this cycle... PASSIONATE about walking in FREEDOM!

Your smile and spark and laughter show through in your pics. You being YOU is CONTAGIOUS... and it's going to encourage other women to be just who THEY are.

AND, another thing that is lovely about this blog? You constantly show you don't have to spend big bucks to do it... which is another lie of fashion mags. Yay for thrifting.

So, thanks... for being you... for encouraging others to be them... for wearing what you wear because you love it.

Much love to you...

How can anyone make a comment as such. Aren't we here at your blog to see what YOU have chosen to wear or do? Aren't we inspired by YOU? I think so.. I don't think that any of the bloggers I follow should change a thing, regardless if I like it or not, or if I would wear it or not.
This is sooo disheartening to me.. I can't believe it.. Do others not realize that there is actually an individual behind these spaces? And that those individuals, those thinking/breathing humans woke up this morning and made an executive decision for themselves and decided to wear that frock, or those leggings, red lipstick or tie the hair up or wear it down.. How can anyone tell someone else how to dress when they seek out the dresser in the first place.. Why comment? Uhhg.. okay I am done! :)

P.s. Karla, you always look amazing and I am soo inspired by you in the fact that you have a very distinct style to YOU and it accentuates YOU and you alone.. As much as I would like to try and copy your style sometimes, I can't.. It is so individual to you and I respect that and follow you because it is nice to see every DIFFERENT person's UNIQUE way of presenting themselves..

Never change!

thanks for being true to yourself! and also to what fashion is about! its really refreshing to see.

People don;t realize that fashion, clothing is an extension of your personality, and sense we all have different personalities, it is insane to think that we should all dress the same.

Stay true to yourself and what fashion represents. love your blog!!

God I love that color of your scarf, it is soo pretty.
Also, I would just ignore those comments, you've been pretty successful dressing yourself & nobody wants to see your unique style turn into a carbon copy of everyone else.

I agree with you. I think that everyone should dress how he wants, despite of what these magazines say. In this way, we'll all be happier in our lives ! (Haha sorry if my English is bad, I don't speak it fluently but I love this language so.. I try !;))

Finally, I love your blog and your outfits, they are just wonderful (even if it's not always my style). We can feel that you wear totally what you want & what you really like, without thinking of what other people could say !

I think fashion can be full of it sometimes...
we should wear want we please and not conform to what others want from us because then we loose the very essence of who we are. When it comes to fashion why be a sheep, when we should be trend setters. People have such great qualities that can shine through weird things. Weird is also beautiful and it's not unheard of that is for sure. I like that you don't focuse on mainstream it is one the reason I find your style spectacular. Fashion takes different forms and being crazy is one of them. I like that you speak your mind on your blog it is what it's for.

I love that trench coat.. It reminds me of a classic Burberry style trench. And although this is a neutral colour you really suit, you shouldn't have to follow anyone elses rules!
People come to different blogs for different reasons- so why should they be the ones suggesting you change? I hope you don't take the comments to heart.
Oh, and loving the shots with the umbrella!

you look wonderful! I've noticed myself that you're style has changed since you started the blog... one of the reason because I adore to come here, is beacause you always wear what you like, without taking care of people who tell you that you look older or fatter with that dress or that skirt. as you said, fashion is freedom, is fun... it's game! and the greater fact is there aren't fixed rules!
I
after all... I always find you delicious and so beautiful Karla.
Keep rockin your closet the way you're doing now! ;D

Can I get an 'AMEN!' up in this bitch?

Thank so much for pointing that out...I get that a lot in real life, but I end up following my own drum (only took me, like 23 years to do it, lol)...

In the meantime, keep doing what you're doing...I may not like everything you post up, but the vast majority is awesome and invigorating, not to mention, inspiring! And screw those idiots who try to take over YOUR blog...if they want someone to wear what they suggest, then they can start THEIR OWN blog, damnit...

oh goodness... my 2 cents is pretty much spot on with most here. I am inspired by your looks and style. I love to look at what you put together. Today the trench and shiny leggings are SO CUTE! All of my life I have heard comments about how 'weird' I dress. Lucky for me, I don't dress for them! lol Naysayers... keep clicking.. :)

Hey Karla,
Your style is great and i totally agree. Anyone who tries to dress a certain way just cause they are told to, is truely missing out! Fashion is about self expression and I say dress how ever you like.

Keep it up!

I love the tights and your smile, makes the outfit pop even more. And I SO get your point! Nicely put :) (I'm still dealing with that being tall so dresses and shorts seem shorter on me, curvy so things can hug my form tightly or make me appear fat, and dressing how colorfully I want yet being pratical, since I work with kids and go to a conservative church. Learning to find a balance and the confidence. Being able to feel comfortable in my fashion sense even if I get uncomfortable looks and how to play with the term, "appropriate".)

I totally agree Karla! Who says everyone wants to look thinner? Or that we all want the allusion of longer legs? I like my average lenghted, thick legs and love accentuating my curvy hips! Fashion should be fun and non-conforming. Not everyone wants to look an emaciated mannequin! (no offense to the models out there)There are different looks that we all want to convey and we shouldn't impede on other people's desires/visions.
